Tomorrow when I leave my house to go to liberty station I will get a Starbucks because it’s too early to go to anywhere especially if we will be exhibiting our work. When I arrive at liberty station I will immediately head over to my station and help set-up, so that when people come by we will be ready and have a fun day. The materials that we will have are bean bags x10, bowls, canopy, tablecloth, and little book. The bean bags and bowls is part of our game, our game is like beer pong but replaced with food. Our game starts off with us giving the audience a scenario and they have to choose the right breakfast choice. I imagine us working really hard as a group and with the professionals it would be an honor because they are going to give us really great critique and given the critique our booth and exhibition overall will be phenomenal. A goal that I want to happen at exhibition is while I instruct people about having a healthy diet they will appreciate that my group is concerned people’s health. Another goal that I want to happen is if there are little kids and they want to play I hope that they will learn and want to keep eating a healthy meal so that they can live a healthy life. What I am excited about is just exhibiting at a place I am used to going to and just telling people about my group's topic and cheer people on while they do the nami walk. “Let’s build wellness rather than treating disease” said by Dr. Bruce Daggy.

On the first week back from spring break we were preparing for my t-shirt design. I had to double check my design to make sure it looked presentable. Before getting professional critique on my t-shirt design I was fixing my design because in festival del sol I got feedback on what needs improvements. The improvements that needed work were the design and message. Our class was fortunate enough to get critique from David Varela, who is a professional graphic designer, and Anitra, a non-profit founder, it was to my best benefit because they both offered great ideas. When David gave me critique he suggested that I change my plate into the brain, because when I showed him my first draft he liked the idea of having a plate with the right pyramid materials. When I showed him my second draft he liked it even more because instead of having different sides on the plate for what types of food you should eat, I put the brain in the middle of the plate. In my design, I put the brain in the middle of the plate because when you play video games you should have the right meal beforehand so that you can focus better and articulate better reflex actions. If you are to eat a steak before you game you will be full for at least 2 hours and you will be really focused. If you are to eat snacks every 10-20 minutes into your gaming session you are most likely to be distracted and have slow reflexes. When Anitra looked at my design and I told her the idea from David, she agreed because she has 3 kids and 2 of her boys are gamers and she could totally see her kids through my design which is pretty cool.
This week in biology I have learned more about my topic nutrition and the types of foods and drinks to drink after an activity that you will have have done already. For drinks I have learned that green tea is good for you the amino acids generates more alpha brain waves, for main course eggs is good for your because their omega-3 fatty acids and protein content, lastly for sides a cup of blueberries and avocado toast are good for you. In the beginning I thought that oatmeal is good for me because it’s easy to make and it’s delicious, but I have learned that eggs are better for you. My groups games was Toss It. We named it toss it because we told the audience a scenario and they had to choose what drink, main course, and side was good for them for breakfast or after workout meal. The amount of people playing our game I would have to say that 12/20 people got the answer right. But there was this one lady who was a teacher and she got all the first choice answers right. I was surprised that she got all the first choices right because everybody was thinking about the opposite meals/ drinks. In my book grain brain there is a graph that shows high-carb and a low fat diet. It started in 1981- 2011 and I was surprised to see how much the amount has changed over the years.
I choose this image because 1 it’s my group's topic and 2 I have a better understanding on why nutrition is good for you and your body. Nutrition is good for you because the types of food that is given to you will give you a lot of energy for the day. To me I think the most important aspect for my topic nutrition is the types of food you put on your plate and into your body. If you have a plate of rice, steak, green beans, and mash potatoes it will give you a lot of strength because it is a heavy meal. A statement that I wrote is “ Nutrition is life” I wrote the statement because whatever you put in your body it will affect it in a good or bad way.
In biology within our project groups I have re-learned that nutrition in different types of foods will affect your mood and your actions. For example if you eat a full meal with rice or a salad it will make you full for about 2-3 hours depending on how much food you eat. If you eat junk food it will only fulfill your hunger for a short amount of time. A connection that I can make was last Tuesday. In cross fit we did a very hard endurance workout I only had a banana for snack and after cross fit I had track practice. I powered through it but after practice my body was shutting down. A question that I have is why do certain types of food affect the way you function the whole day? I choose this image because it’s labeled in food item we buy on a daily basis. It is important because it tells how much calories, total fat, etc. The nutrition fact tag tells us how much we should eat per serving. Reflection of LearningWhen we went to the CARE I learned that if you have the cap with the sticky things on it it will tell you the movements that you will make onto the computer. When reading our book Brain Grain I learned that diet and exercise can boost our body’s natural methods to manage inflammation. To me that is very relating because I love to exercise and I didn’t know that nutrition can boost our natural methods in being in good shape. Exercising is good for you because if you have a disease it will delay it and you will become healthy and be in shape. For me exercising is a natural thing because I always think to myself that I have to stay fit to become healthier. In freshmen year I started to do crossfit for my sixth period and I loved it because it made me pursue my staying healthy habits, all thanks to my teacher and coach Ms. Britt. My wondering for the week is how does being healthy delay your sickness such as diabetes. In middle school I loved p.e class but I didn’t like doing the activities, once I got into high school and joined crossfit I enjoyed it because I guess the way Ms. Britt taught it I enjoyed it. I choose this photo because burpees are a pain in the butt. Everybody in the class can do every single workout, but once it comes to burpees everybody complains.
As young advocates we can reduce teen brain health stigmas by watching our language by not cursing too much. An example would be if you call somebody or something retarded, or even saying the “n” word when you are not supposed to. To reduce that stigma try not to curse for a day or even a week. Just imagine it like how we were younger and we weren't supposed to curse because it is bad. Cursing is bad for your health because if you do it on a normal basis then it will be normal for you but to other people they will think you were raised that way. In 8th grade I cursed a lot in pe and I was called out by my teacher and she told me that it’s bad to curse in school. My curiosity is why are the bad word considered bad if it’s in our language? I choose this image because its reasonable. Reasonable in a way to everybody because a lot of people swear and they don’t know how many times they do so if I counted how many times Juan Lee swore I’d be rich. When I was in middle school I also had biology and my bio teacher said “If you curse your entire life you will become a douche bag.” I agreed with her because if you only use curse words then your vocabulary will be horrible. I was present one day when the presenters were here, but I can say that I have learned something new. They talked about the human brain and how it effects can connect with the structures of the brain. They also said that the human brain and animal brain similar, meaning that animals can be as smart as us. The animal brain can be similar to the human brain depending on the animal. The animal they used was a rat, they used the rat because in the lab it’s easy to learn about their brain and how the function due to their size. Also it’s easy for them to compare the rats to us human brains. We are not similar but both brains have a lot of similarities. In biology I learned that some animal brains are really close to our brain and scientists main test subject are mice or rats, (I know this information but I’m just saying.)
I choose this image because it explains the differences with our brain and the mouse’s brain. I’m not comparing the size of the brain but I’m comparing the names that we have that the mouse doesn’t have. Ex. Olfactory bulb is in the mouse and we humans have the frontal lobe. A memorable moment for me was on the second night of the trip. It was the most memorable for me because for dinner my squad had a financial crisis at Scales Seafood in Monterey. Ari, Mariano, Estavan, Ruben, and myself. It was most memorable for me because everybody was ready to pay for their food but didn’t take out the right amount of cash so the cashier had to take her sweet time time look at each of our receipts to make sure we had the right meal and we all argued about the cash. A memorable thing that I remembered from Jazmine (our tour guide) said that Santa Cruz is ranked the number 6 school for engineering and I was so hyped to hear that they are the number 6 school for engineering in the world. I was hyped because I’m interested in engineering and I didn’t know that they are one of the best in California. My thoughts on attending a 4 year university is a yes. No my perspective hasn’t changed. My plan is to go 2 years to a community college and for my 3rd and 4th year I will be switching to a UC college.
This is Jazmine (our tour guide for Santa Cruz) and she is telling us the culture of her school.
I would like to advocate for exercise, autism, and competitive gaming.I would want to get exercise because throughout my whole life I’ve been doing physical activities and I enjoy it. When Jose presented his slide I was a bit touched because his topic was about exercise and I love to exercise. Jose has quoted “ Exercising is good for you and there are no stigmas for it. It’s easy for everybody and everybody can do it.”
Autism because I have some family members who have autism and I would love to learn what goes on inside their head. Finally competitive gaming, I would want to advocate for competitive gaming because I sometimes compete with people online. This proposal is meaningful for me because I want to experience new things and get a better knowledge of the two topics, autism and competitive gaming. In biology, while we were presenting our slides, I learned something new from Angelica’s presentation. Angelica’s topic was about LOVE and she said that when holding hands with that special someone, it means they really love that person. A question that I had for the week was if the average age to play video games is 33 years of age, why is it that kids are the ones that mostly gaming that older people? I made a connection to Jose’s presentation to my personal life because when I was in middle school I decided to dedicate myself to be an active person and once I heard him present it gave me a flashback to when I first started to enjoy exercising. This week an experience that I have learned was that when cutting the small and large intestines and the stomach in half, enzymes and other chemicals come out of it because it hasn’t eaten real food due to being a fetal pig. At first I thought it was poop because it looks like it, but I learned that if an animal is being tested the scientists inject the animal with chemicals so that when it dies it won’t be poop that will come it, it will be the chemicals. When Tafoya and I were cutting the stomach in half and we saw the “poop” in their we both had that disgusted face. My question for this week is “If the pig ate food and got injected with the chemicals, what will happen if we cut open the stomach and the small intestine? Will it be chemicals and poop or something else. My other curiosity that I have is if we cut open the human body, will it be harder to locate the parts if you are an immediate doctor?
I have chosen this image because while Matthew and I were locating the gall bladder it was hard but once we moved the small and large intestine out of the way we found it. In my opinion this was a fun 2 week project. I had a connection with my middle school self because in eighth grade in science class we cut open a rat and it was nasty. It was a fun process but I didn't get the full experience, due to me being a little baby. |
